Guess who's taking French 101? ;-)

Jul. 21st, 2014 | 11:21 am

I had the super-low goal of pronouncing French loan words correctly, and reading Le Petit Prince out loud. Before this course, the only French phrase I knew was “omelette du fromage*” X-D

To remember that hands are feminine and face is masculine, I pictured Uhura's hand caressing Spock’s face.
La main, le visage.

Derek Hale eats his vegetables, bikes every day, has a punishing diet regime and obsessively cleans his house to show that he can provide for his mate. Derek Hale’s arms. Derek Hale’s face.
Le légume, le cyclisme, le régime, le ménage.
Les bras, le visage.

You’re welcome.

* Dexter’s Laboratory. The dictionary tells me it should be “omelette au fromage.” My childhood cartoon show, you have lied to me. All your bases are belong to us.

Two more days (a chapter quiz and final exam) and I'm done. Possibly the last language class I'll ever take at the university. I ran out of money/education award, for one thing... The award didn't even cover 4 credits, hahah, so everything else was out of pocket (building maintenance, campus beautification, etc).

I rented the textbook from Amazon, but was forced to shell out $80~ for the "lab" portion of the course. What’s wrong with good old CDs, people?? College tuition in the U.S. is unreasonably expensive =__= even compared to just a decade ago (which was when I graduated).

Obligatory Hiatus Post

Dec. 17th, 2012 | 06:08 am

Due to (happy!*) rl events, I'll be away for the next two months-ish.

Contacting me via e-mails or comments are the best way to go, although I can't promise a timely response. (PMs are not as convenient because I'll need to log in first to see your message).

* Those curious and who don't read me on LJ can just ask me.

~~~
I only have two non-spoilery things to say about The Hobbit (which I watched Friday morning):
1) I'm glad I was forewarned; otherwise I'd be "???" throughout the movie.
2) Finding two dwarves (separately and/or together) attractive is just WRONG. Okay not as wrong as finding house-elves attractive. I am, of course, referring to Thranduil and Kili.
I'm looking forward to the NuTrek sequel with Villain!BenedictCumberbatch AAaaaaahhh ahhhhhhhh new haircuuuuuttt *INCOHERENT*.
~~~

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Chrismukkah, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! =DDD

Feel free to spam this post with links. See you all in February-ish! *hugs*

Last year I watched Star Trek with Japanese voice acting.

Jul. 27th, 2010 | 02:09 am

(X-posting because I'm f-locking the LJ post)

Spock's voice = the straight-laced, class president type who's quiet, serious, and perfect in every way. With hidden depths (or secret, endearing vice)! Sometimes with bonus hot geek glasses.
e.g. Death Note's Light/Raito pre-psychosis. Or Kare Kano's Soichiro Arima, minus the weakling appearance.

Kirk's voice = the happy-go-lucky youngster who just. Never. Gives. Up. And is inexplicably loved by everyone, friend and foe alike. Have the devil's own luck.
In other words, the main character of every single shounen anime out there. But nowhere as whiny as Naruto, dear lord.

Bones' voice = the laid back old guy who drinks sake and is vaguely lecherous/flirtatious to everyone, esp. their subordinates. Usually the mentor/teacher figure to the main character. And always turns out to have a dark, tragic past.
e.g. that pink flower kimono + straw hat-wearing captain in Bleach.

Uhura's voice = the straight-laced heroine who has Clear Views regarding Justice. Hates bullies and will fight them to protect the weak. Usually admires/has a crush on the class president, or is a class president herself.
e.g. lots of Hayao Miyazaki's heroines.

I was so disappointed by Sulu's voice, because he just has a generic voice. The you'll-only-see-me-in-two-episodes-max voice T_T

Six RemixRedux09 recs (Or, Crossovers are awesome when done right)

Aug. 4th, 2009 | 05:59 pm

Three crossovers:

1. Like an Onion Inside Out (The Doctor, the Queen, and the TARDIS Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] spiralleds
(Narnia/Doctor Who, The Doctor/Susan Pevensie, PG-13)
Summary: Sometimes endings are just the beginning.
Spoilers: Inclusive of the entire Chronicles and through series 4 of the new Doctor Who.
Warning: character deaths, talking animals

Author's meta
Includes Nine, Ten and Thirteen. And it WORKS. Also, even though it's character death, it's Narnia, after all =3

2. Congrats, You've Met Your Match (The Space Captain Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] roga
(ST:XI/SGA, Kirk/Sheppard, R, 3000 words)
Ridiculously hot even without the sex. The original reads as the missing sex scene ;-)

3. Ten Synonyms for Sensational (The Dragon/TARDIS Overdub) by [livejournal.com profile] nopejr (Doctor Who/HP, Ten, Draco Malfoy, PG)
Summary: The Doctor pouted. Draco wasn't impressed.
Cuuuuuute *_* And funny. With fanartzes!

And three non-crossovers:

1. Still Waters (Hypothetically Speaking Extended Dub) by [personal profile] cimorene [LJ]
(ST:XI, gen, mentioned Spock/Uhura, implied Kirk/Spock, PG)

Author's meta
The original is an always-a-girl!Spock genderbend. The remix is Jim's pov, and his finding out (via his slutty ways myriad charms) that Spock is practically royalty. I love how the remix shows the differences of the Kirk/Spock dynamic when Spock's male instead of female.
tl;dr: Am deeply impressed, read it!

2. Art Appreciation (Boxed Wine and Crackers, or the Decline of Public Funding, Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] eyebrowofdoom (Smallville, Clark/Lex, PG)
Summary: If you can do this, you must be morally old enough for a drink.
Spoilers/Warnings: adult themes.
Leeeeeex, you're so cute. Only Lex would have a fantasy life as a starving art student X-D

O/T: In other news, Michael Rosenbaum's Adina/Adam is the only 3-D character in Sorority Boys. I wasn't expecting anything but a stereotypical slapstick comedy (w/ bonus crossdressing Rosenbaum!), so his acting really impressed me =D (believable character, inner conflict, repress repress repress, deny deny deny)
Also, he looks SO YOUNG in that movie.

3. Free Range Subjects (The Scientific Method Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] suaine
(Merlin, Merlin/Arthur, R)
Summary: No one ever said science was easy, and alien scientists are only human, after all.
Spoilers and/or Warnings: non-con (an alien made them do it)
It's an AMTDI fic from the aliens' pov =DDD \o/

Five people Jim Kirk never slept with (and one he did) [Kirk/Spock, PG-13, 150 words]

Jul. 9th, 2009 | 01:46 pm

1. Uhura: It got awkward after he got caught with his pants down with Gaila. At one point he thought she only batted for the girl team, because nothing else explained why she didn't celebrate the awesomeness that is James T. Kirk.

2. Bones: Jim would tap that grumpy Southern doctor so hard, except Bones was the only best friend he had. And painfully straight besides. (They never talked of the My Divorce Papers Came Through Incident.)

3. Chekov: Sulu would kill him. (Didn't stop Jim from calling him "Ensign Jailbait" though.)

4. Nurse Chapel: She's blond and hot, and not entirely immune to his charm. But he once caught her making goggly eyes at Spock. I know, right?

5. Ambassador Spock: It was cold at Delta Vega, but not that cold.

i. Spock: Jim decided to cut the middle man (or women) and go straight to the cockblocking source.

Four people Chekov never fell in love with (and one he did) [Chekov/Sulu, PG-13, 100 words]

Jul. 9th, 2009 | 03:46 am

1. Captain Kirk always flirts, and he doesn't have an "off" switch. Chekov is relieved that the Captain only teases him by calling him "Ensign Jailbait."

2. The beautiful and competent Lt. Uhura only treats him like a little brother.

3. Dr. McCoy is old.

4. Spock is intelligent and has a commanding presence, but it would unnerve him to be the focus of that measuring gaze for long.

5. Like everyone else on the U.S.S. Enterprise, Sulu is older than him. Sulu never pats his curls though, and he grinned that time Chekov said fencing was invented in Russia.

Answers [community profile] star_trek_flashfic's Five Things challenge. Also, I think this is my first present tense piece ever.

What I've written for this meme so far (a flospy, a drabblet & three 100-word drabbles):

- Three facts about Aziraphale from my personal canon/fanon [Good Omens, 129 words]
- A reason Aziraphale is awesomecakes [Good Omens, 60 words]

- The last dream Dog had [Good Omens]

- Four people Chekov never fell in love with, and one person he did [Star Trek: XI]
<-- Awkward sentence construction is awkward.

- Three facts about Spock from my personal canon/fanon [Star Trek: XI]

No Kirk/Spock yet because they're 100 words each. I'm a drabble writer, not a miracle worker. (Except if I skip several years ahead in the timeline, I suppose.)

"one of my sons went to prison and the other has been shot, has killed a man,

and is currently running for his life," Ethan said, and now his voice was so incongruously pleasant as to be grotesque.

Star Trek XI recs:

1. [livejournal.com profile] midnight_city's [fanart] - star trek stuff

It's cute like a v. v. cute, LOLarious thing X-D
Guess the movies! (Hint: both by Pixar =3)
Kid!Spock in a Starfleet summer camp get-up is the BEST THING EVARR <333

2. [livejournal.com profile] hollycomb's Sulu/Chekov fics, which I'm totally all over, once I get over the reflexive tic of "Hikaru no Go! Touya Akira!" whenever I read Chekov calling Sulu "Hikaru" ^^;;
2a. Trouble Sleeping (Sulu/Chekov, R)
Summary: Sulu and Chekov sleep in the same bed, but they're never in it at the same time.
How they got together in the end. Sulu PINING. V. sweet <3

2b. Space Sickness (Sulu/Chekov, NC-17)
Summary: Chekov is sick, Sulu is lost on an alien planet, Kirk is a cockblock.
Established relationship. Sweet and h/c and atmospheric and just right *_*

2c. Theoretically (Sulu/Chekov, NC-17)
Summary: Sulu makes Chekov watch the classic American Terminator movies. Chekov has some thoughts.
I wanna watch the new Terminator movie because Anton Yelchin's in it, but apparently it's even more awful than T3? ^^;;

2d. If I Didn't Care (Sulu/Chekov, NC-17)
Summary: Kirk and Chekov have a harrowing experience together on a dangerous planet, and Sulu is definitely not jealous.

If you only have time to read two, read the first two. If you only have time to read one, read "Space Sickness."

Sulu pining *_* Chekov seducing Sulu >=D

3. [personal profile] rageprufrock's new WIP: Discourses in Management (Lab), pt 1/? (PG-13, for language)
Summary: “How’s it going?” the instructor asks, her voice a harmony, hovering nearby. / "Futilely,” Spock volunteers at the same time Jim says, “Shitty.”

In other news, even though Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) is a cheap, loli-shota knock-off of Kaori Yuki's Count Cain, I did enjoy the Bengali Prince arc, because no manga is complete without SURPRIZE appearance of South Asian/Middle Eastern/teeny European Kingdom royalty.

Also, can't help but be amused by the American chef (An American chef in a British household? lololol).

Okay, I lie, my fav. character is still the Bengali prince's servant.

"I'M BRILLIANT. MORE MILK, MORE MILK! NOW SCOWL, I WANT FIERCENESS. GROWL AT THE MILK! HATE THE MILK! GRIMACE! I'M SUCH AN EPIC ARTIST I SHOULD JUST CHOP MY EAR OFF NOW"

-- [personal profile] ifyouweremine channeling the photographer of that video of milk being "flung suggestively" at Zachary Quinto X-D

...you'll have to watch it yourself. I recommend the "I'm Too Sexy" alternate soundtrack. (The milkshake thing is overdone, really.)

3.
Mr. Spock [...] holds the valid belief that he shares a bloodline with Mr. Holmes. The relationship at first seemed easy to explain; While Mr. Spock exhibits the physical characteristics and upbringing of his native planet Vulcan, he is in fact half human. His mother, Amanda (neé Grayson) was American, but the name Grayson is of English extraction.

[...]

[T]he Graysons can only trace their family back as far as Professor Jeremy Grayson of Boston in the year 2045. Spock cannot know, then, that his mother's family tree includes a Holmesian branch. At this point, we have eliminated one possibility: the only other one, that Spock gets his Sherlockian ancestry from his father's side, must by Spock's and Holmes' own rule be true. But this is an audacious possibility, because we know from Spock's World that the marriage between Spock’s father Sarek and Amanda Grayson was the first interracial marriage between human and Vulcan, and that genetic engineering was needed to produce Spock. If Holmes was Spock's ancestor, then, it follows that Holmes was a Vulcan.

--Scott, David M. "Sherlock Holmes: Visitor to a Small Planet"

Not only does Spock descend from Sherlock Holmes, he's related to Dick Grayson, twelve years old >=D Oh wait, actually it's not a good thing to share Nightwing's genes.
Genetic engineering --> Spock ~ Conner Clark Luthor? X-D

mood: Uhura =/= Anhora Uhura =/= Anhora

I have to admit that I only watched Star Trek because of:
1) Sylar with eyebrows! and,
2) I want to read [personal profile] ifyouweremine's pr0n

Like a gazillion other people have said, it was GLORIOUS.

I like every single character in that movie, and that _never_ happened to me before.
Yes, including the evil Romulan guy, who I found vaguely hot (which is understandable because he was played by Eric Bana, who played Hector in Troy).
I even like Spock's mother (didn't recognize Winona Ryder until her third appearance X-D)

[livejournal.com profile] ruien shared ST canon tidbits with me, but I was all, "Uh-huh. Sylar with eyebrows! Spock Spock Spock!"
I should like BlondPratJerk!Kirk better, but I don't. It's the power ot the eyebrows!111

I want to cuddle ickle!Spock with his pretty eyes <333 Spock! Spock Spock Spock Spock Spock! Spock!
Ickle!Kirk was awesome too! And Kirk was as pretty as everyone said <333
Mind meld! Spock! Spock!
Kirk Senior was hot too! Alternate Reality! Spock!

I even love the canon het pairing =D =D =D

Hikaru Sulu! Gold power ranger! Fold-out sword! Fencing!
17 y.o. Chekhov OMGSoPrecious ^___^ "I can do it I can do it I can do it"

Eomer Karl Urban's stupid haircut makes me want to cry, but otherwise YAY Bones! Spock!

I'm going to watch it at IMAX later tonight =D =D =D
PSA: It's only playing in IMAX until this Thursday.

Bring on the fics where Kirk licks Spock's eyebrows MWAHAHAHAHA >=D

- Awesome mind-meld plotbunny
- Star Trek Reboot Drabble Challenge: Journey to Drabble -- 100 prompts =)
- [livejournal.com profile] st_xi_kink's kink meme

Non-Star Trek related:
- movie ads in Canada run TEN MINUTES LONGER than movie ads in the U.S., which is already pretty darned long.
- Canadian males in ads all have the same closely-set-together-eyes and tall straight nose, just like American TV actors all have square jaws =P
